How does piercing work?
A hollow needle is passed through the body part followed by the insertion of the body jewelry in the hole. A small amount of bleeding may occur as a result of the piercing. A piercing gun should not be used because it crushes the tissues that are pierced and it cannot be properly resterilized.
Which jewelry type is good for my piercing?
The type of jewelry inserted will depend on the body part. For example, a short barbell in the tongue will lead to problems when the tongue starts to swell. The type of jewelry used must accommodate the swelling that follows the piercing procedure. It is recommend you choose non-toxic metals such as surgical steel, 14K gold, niobium, or titanium to avoid infections and allergic reactions. For list of jewelry terms, visit Piercing and Jewelry
What's a typical healing time?
Each body piercing site has its own normal healing time. Any areas in the face, mouth or tongue can last up to 8 weeks to heal. The ear area is longer up to 12 weeks. The nipple, genital and navel areas can take up to 12 months.
How do I clean my piercing and pierced area?
Clean the piercing area with an antibacterial soap twice a day. Do not use alcohol or Peroxide to clean the area at any time. Wash your hands with soap before touching or cleaning the pierced part during the healing process. Don’t let anyone else touch the pierced part during the healing period.
What can cause an infection?
Piercing sites that are covered by clothes such as nipple, navel, or genital piercings may become infected because of perspiration and rubbing of clothing. Even your own sweat may irritate the piercing. If the piercing is an ear piercing, clean your telephone and sun or eye glasses with Lysol spray or alcohol. Wash the part of eye glasses that touch your ear with soap and water. Avoid public pools and hot tubs until the piercing has healed. For mouth care following tongue or lip piercing, choose an antibacterial mouthwash that does not contain alcohol and rinse your mouth after all meals and snacks.
How long does it take to have a tattoo finished?
The time it takes to get a tattoo varies with size and complexity. A smaller tattoo done by machine may take fifteen minutes; another might take hundreds of hours or multiple sessions.
How do I take care my new tattoo?
Some artists recommend keeping a new tattoo wrapped for the first twenty-four hours, while others suggest removing temporary bandaging after two hours or less. Many tattooists advise against allowing too much contact with water for the first few days. This is to prevent the tattoo ink from washing out or fading since common inks are water based. General consensus for care advises against removing the scab that forms on a new tattoo, and avoiding exposing one's tattoo to the sun for extended periods; both of these can contribute to fading of the image.
How do I clean my tattoo and tattooed area?
Various products may be recommended for application to the skin, ranging from those intended for the treatment of cuts, burns and scrapes, to petroleum jelly or lanolin. In recent years, specific commercial products have been developed for tattoo aftercare. Although opinions about these products vary, there is near total agreement that either alone or in addition to some other product, soap and warm water work well to keep a tattoo clean and free from infection.
Can I remove a tattoo?
While tattoos are considered permanent, it is possible to remove them. Complete removal, however, may not be possible (although many doctors and laser practitioners make the claim that upwards of 95% removal is possible with the newest lasers, especially with black and darker colored inks), and the expense and pain of removing them typically will be greater than the expense and pain of applying them.
You may consider an alternative method: cover-up tattoo.
